Question:

Buy or wait?

I will be flying to Columbia, SC in a few weeks for Syracuse, NY. Both are small airports, so I know the flights will be more expensive. BUT...I've been watching airfares on Travelocity and the price had been going down and then 2 weeks ago it started going up....and has gone up over $100 in the last 2 weeks to more than $500! Any suggestions of how to get a better deal on the ticket? I've been watching all of the major travel sites. I don't know whether to buy it now in case the prices keep going up or wait it out because they should go down as I get closer time. Help?

  1. Try to find a major airport nearby fly there and take a train or bus to where you are going. If not possible buy now!

  2. This is normal. Buy it, but make it refundable. The closer the date, the more expensive it is because whe the airline start sorting out ohw much food to get, drinks, luggage etc..  they make it higher because it starts interfering with this.

An trans-alantic flight cost a little as £200 two years in advance, yet 4 months to the date may cost a staggering £7,000

  3. I would suggest you book your ticket at least 21 days prior to departure. Check out airline web sites as well,as they may offer web specials. US Air , Northwest,Delta all offer service. Not sure if you are flexible with dates/times but that may help get a lower rate by booking off peak times.

Most of the increase in the ticket prices are due to the airlines not actually changing the fare but increasing the fuel surcharges.

  4. As you probably have already guessed, it is a gamble.  Who know with the economy the way it is and the price of fuel going out of the roof...anything can happen.  Myself, I keep thinking, that it cannot possible go up any more...but you know what can happen.  My thinking is..they may not up the price of the actual flight, but will have a number of added costs, for luggage, ticket handlers fee. boarding fees, air port fees, luggage weight fees and so on...you get the drift...your guess is as good as anyone Else's in this subject.

  5. what?

  6. -airline prices are refreshed tuesdays weekly after midnight when cancellations are updated in the system...you may find better deals then

-check prices on airline websites first then compare to  expedia and priceline - prices are better there than orbitz or travelocity

-try spiritairlines.com - they have excellent deals (the cheapest i've found - but may be due to frequent delays and missed connections betwewen flights - check yelp.com for reviews)

    hope that helps!
