  1. Well. A TV Tuner for the PC will just mean you'll get analog signal which is going digital in Feb of '08. What you could do is just get a small TV and just hook cable up to that with no extra charge.

What you could do is download TVUPlayer which is basically a TV software for the computer. it gives you real time channels like Spike Comedy Central CNN and etc. Heres the link http://www.tvunetworks.com/

    I hope this helps!

  2. Personally I prefer the ATI All-In-Wonder cards. They discontinued the line for a few years and just recently revived them this year. I don't even know if you can buy the newest one yet, but it just came out or will be on the market super soon.

They have GREAT software, some recording options, pause, play. All that fun stuff just like a TiVo.

Your cable bill shouldn't be higher. The cable company can't tell the difference as far as I know. Some cable companies do have a "kill" signal that wont allow you to record certain shows (they just send a signal to all types of DVR that tells it not to record whatever is playing - often things like live sports or Pay-Per-View movies)

I am still running an old AGP box with an All-In-Wonder that is about 8 years old and I love it. Highly recommended.  You can get them at pretty much any computer type store (Best Buy, Circuit City.) Even Wal-mart carries them. I don't know what other options you have up in Canada but I am sure you can find something.

P.S. I DO recommend buying online. You will find the prices to be much better, but don't go the ebay route. Check out www.newegg.com they generally have the best prices around, cheap fast shipping, and amazing customer service.

P.P.S I am not sure how the change to all digital will affect TV-tuner cards next year. I would imagine you can still use them just fine with the converter box that you would use for a regular TV. I have not researched it just yet, but the fact that ATI is fully aware of the digital switch, I don't think they would release a product that would become obsolete after 8 months of use. I am pretty sure they incorporated support into the new line of cards

  3. no, all cheap

the advantage: reduce your bank balance by paying TV licence
