  1. fish and meat:  don't buy them

veggies:  buy organic when possible, buy local when possible, buy unwaxed, fresh looking, dark greens, wide variety

  2. For fish, make sure it doesn't have a fishy smell to it when you buy it.  The meat you get will most likely be fine if you buy it from behind a meat counter at a grocery store.  Make sure the vegetables are a deep color and that they aren't limp.

  3. I know nothing about buying fish and meat, except I don't.

Vegetables should be crisp. No spots, no mush, no slime, no funny smell. If they look nice, there's a d**n good chance they're going to taste nice. :D
