I am going to Italy in Sept(Rome,Florence,Venice). I am trying to keep the costs down on this trip. Is it cheaper to buy train and attraction tickets ahead of time? If so what are the most used websites for this service? Thanks

  1. Hello,

You should wait until you get to Italy to buy your train and entrance tickets.  If you use a ticket booking site they will charge you a fee on top of the entrance price.  There are only a few sites where you might consider doing this.  The Uffizi gallery is one of them.  Other than that, I would wait.  As for the trains, there are numerous trains every day on the routes you will take.  Try to buy your tickets a few days in advance to take advantage of discounts like the amica fare or the due per uno fare.  If you have a tight schedule, you can buy all your tickets at once at the station and get the best fare available.  You can use the self service kiosks to book your tickets.  Check the trenitalia website before you go to see the timetables so you can get a better idea of the trains you might want to take.  You can even print out the timetables to take with you so you can get the exact train you want if it is available.

  2. For train tickets, maybe. There isn't a discount on the regional trains, but there is the Amica fare, which is a 20% discount, on Intercity, Eurostar, and Alta Velocita trains. You can get the fare at ticket machines and windows or by booking on the website: http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html. The tickets aren't available more than 60 days in advance and must be bought at least a day in advance. These are often sold out earlier though because there are a limited number of seats at this price on a given train.
