  1. I would suggest buying either the D40, D40x, or D60.

The D40 is an excellent camera for a low (DSLR) price.

The D40x has 4mp over the D40, and is a bit more expensive.

The D60 has many great features, and has a cool eye sensor that would do you well if you do any night photography.

In the end it's all up to how much you'd like to spend.  One last tip-use Ebay, that's where I got my D40x for about 500, as opposed to around 700.

  2. All very good. The D40 would be the most affordable they are $499 brand new.
