Question:

Buying a Lancer Evo 8...need some opinions first?

Everywhere iv read, iv read that it is the superior car (compared to STI) My problem though is my brother mentioned he has driven a Evo 8 and he said he would rather drive his 93 GTI and that mitsubishi is c**p. Would u disagree? How is the build quality of the evo 8? I just want to know when buying the car that not only is it a great performing great looking 4 door...but that is will last as a daily driver for a long time and is a good quality car overall.

I plan on getting a stock evo 8 , the base model (one that comes with sunroof) with no mods done to it or assured it hasnt been run hard or raced. What il be doing with it is daily driver+ once a month visiting a rally track to test my skills.

Im also told by a STI mechanic that JUST brake jobs on the STI are 3000+ dollars cause they are brembo...is everything else just as expensive as far as mantinence is concerned?

Thanks

Would love comments from EXPERIENCED drivers/owners/mechanics

  1. There are very few better DRIVERS cars than an evo. Personally i rate the old evo 4 as a better car than the evo 8, but thats just me. The 8 has had its rough edges smoothed and its not quite the same any more.  Build quality is certainly not VW/Audi like but it is not goingto fall apart on you.

If you think you are going to buy a gently used, non abused model - Good Luck - people do not buy an evo to doddle along 10mph under the speed limit!

You are in the USA but I am in the UK - we tend to keep our cars a lot longer than you guys. There is not a USA built car that could keep an evo in sight on winding English country roads.

  2. h**l yeah bro go with the Evo! They are awesome and you won't be disappointed. I loved mine until my foot met my gas pedal and they bonded really fast haha.

  3. your brother no offense is stupid

his car is a fwd gti

the evo 8 is awd+ turbo , the evo will kill his gti anyday!

overall its a good car the only thing i would worry about with a used EVO is the condion of the turbo

  4. i had the 2008 mitsubishi lancer gt. with navi and sunroon (fully loaded). The thing with these cars is that theyre great in every sense but gas sucks ***! and my hubby and i looked at the evo8 and those are worse in gas but the preformance is great!!!! i love those cars! it has the racey feel to it! Well maintnence is pricey my hubby crashed the lancer about 1 month ago, he hit those big polls that hold the freeway together and he killed the car, The good thing was the he did not have one scratch on him, but the car was ugly from the front, the whole front was horrible, you can tell right away that the material is just plastic and crappy, the car slanted to one side... the engine was shattered from the front. The car was not going to be totaled and they said the repair  was going at about 15 grand to fix it all and they said it still would never be the same again. We decided because we have a baby this wouldnt be a safe car and asked for it to be totaled. Insurance company said they were going to total anyway because to fix engine was to pricey. They paid they whole 26 grand i owed. i had it for less than a year. But just imagine if this was a 08 lancer not the evo8 which has allot more gadgets and power, this was still expensive as h**l to fix now imagine the evo. But overall great cars,, preformance its a 10+ look 10+ gas 5...its  pricey though...I miss mine talking about it.

PLEASE MEN DONT GIVE ME NEGATIVES OR THUMBS DOWN BECAUSE IM A FEMALE...BE COURTIOUS!

  5. mitsubishi makes great cars, if your gonna use them for what they were made for.

evo should be used for racing, wether it be drift, track, street or drag. they are designed to handle corners with precision. applying horsepower to the wheel  that is in the turn. making them easier to handle while going fast.

parts depend on what you get also, you can get cheap breaks as an option or expensive.

a normal driver who doesnt race at all would not be able to appreciate the evo/sti. people like me, who race, are able to see to true potential of a car and will use it. different drivers recgonize different things. since i drive cars hard, i look at the evo and say its a great car because it can be driven into the ground and still go

  6. out of all cars in the price range i would still drive a base model skyline wack a turbo on it and youve got yourself a cruise missile nailed to the ground.  As for the argument between stis and evos it will always be the evo that wins, faster lighter better fuel economy and just dam s**y.

  7. Well it's going to be d**n near impossible to find an Evo 9 that hasn't been beat on. People buy those cars to drive them hard. With that said the car is based more around performance that creature comforts. That's probably what turned your brother off.

As far as taking it to rally that would be a horrible idea since it's suspension is set up for the street not for rallying. Also NEVER race a car(take it to a track or off road in the woods at high speeds) unless you can afford to write the car off completely. Most insurance companies will NOT cover it if the car gets damaged during the track time.

Since you are worried about the cost of a brake job then this would likely apply to you. As far as maintenance goes it would probably be more expensive for the EVO specific stuff, but for the regular Lancer stuff it would probably be fairly cheap.

  8. Mitsubishi helped bring the US into WWII when they provided airplanes to the Japanese Imperial Army to use as kamakase dive bombers on our ships at Pearl Harbor and throughout the rest of WWII.

They make kinda lousy cars. Get yourself a Honda or a Pontiac.
