Question:

Buying a Yamaha YZF-R1 for new rider?

Hey guys, I want to buy a Yamaha YZF-R1 when I get my license instead of a car. I will be 17 around the time of purchase. Probably something older like a 2003, because I have found those are around 5000. I have heard that that it's too much power for a new rider and I don't have a death wish. I have no previous riding experience(I used to drive a Honda 70cc when I was 9 years old till about 12 years old).

Will this be too powerful? Do you guys have any other suggestions? I want something sporty, but like I said I wont be tryingt o race anything. lol Thanks in advance.

  1. Whoa!  1000 cc is a loaded gun, accident waiting to happen!   Personally, I would recommend a 250 or 600 where you can beef it up later when you out grow the stock bike.

    STAY AWAY FROM R1!!

  2. 17 and R1 usually equal trouble because they all say I am not going to race anything...that makes me laugh lol...If you have self control and a healthy wallet....insurance on a 1000 for a 17yrold is outrageuos!...go for it. Otherwise try a R6 or CBR 600RR or a GSXR 600 or if you want to have fun a Suzuki DR-Z 400

  3. I would get the GSX-R 600.  I just bought a 1000 as my first bike, and it definitely is a lot to handle.  You get plenty of power out of a 600.  Just look at it this way, if you get the 600 and wreck it, you arent out as much money as if you paid more for the 1000cc.  If you keep it in good shape and decide you want to move up to a 1000cc later, you can always sell the 600cc and probably get most of your cash back.  It's not like Gixxers are going out of style...

  4. do not get an R1 as a novice rider...it WILL kill you !

  5. you have to be 18 to get a bike license

  6. Dont be stupid. An 1000cc sportbike is like a gun in a childs hands.

Get a 250cc or at the biggest 600cc. If you think a 600cc is slow then you need to take your meds, or learn how to ride it.

  7. You death will be quick, but not painless.

Why not become a pilot, and jump into an F-16 right out of flight school
