Buying a bike for college?

I am going to college in fall, and my friend there suggests me getting the kind of bike that has thin wheels, because it is better suited for the landscape in berkeley. What's that type of bike called? I already have a mountain bike, but is it really necessary to get that specific type of bike?

  1. Not necessary to get another bike put slick tyres on your mountain bike and away you go

  2. "Which is a better bike, a Trek or a Specialized?

Or Cannondale or Orbea or Scott or Schwinn or Cervelo. We're asked "Which brand is better?" almost daily. While each brand has its diehard fans, we can't answer the question. It's not because of any political reason, but because it's not the right question to ask--you're buying a bicycle, not a brand. .."

  3. They are talking about a hybrid bike;  basically a mountain bike with bigger wheels and narrower tires.   Unless you are gonna be bikig several miles a day, your mountain bike should work fine for college.

One thing you may want to consider tho; if you have a really nice MTB, it may attract the criminal element and you may wanna consider another bike for tooling around...
