Question:

Buying a bike with a learner's permit?

To clear things up first, I am enrolled in a bike safety course (though it's a bit more prolonged than I had hoped).

I have a learner's permit (passed the written test in Wisconsin) and would like to purchase a 250cc bike that I could operate on the streets of my condo association (~20MPG) and the larger parking lots of the park across the street from me (when it's not crowded, of course). Basic turning and handling at low speeds mostly. I would be in possession of all necessary safety gear and have no intention of operating it at night.

Anyway, if I wanted to purchase a bike this week, are there any obstacles a dealer may throw at me? Anything (or anyone) I should bring besides the driver's license and temp endorsement?

  1. you don't even need a motorcycle endorsement. all you need is the money for the bike and possibly liabilty insurance on the bike depending on where you live. call the dealer and check with him, it won't be a dumb question - he gets asked it all the time.

  2. Cash up front - no license needed

Financing - need license and insurance

Now if you want to test ride it before you buy it then you will need your license

  3. You dont' need a M1 license or permit to purchase a bike. As long as you have the money (if you are paying cash) or if they can find a bank to give you the loan. All you need is a valid ID (c class license will do) and thats it. But I believe you do have to be 18 or over unless you are having a parent/guardian co-sign. I bought my bike two months ago and without a license or permit. Now I have my permit so I can drive around. You don't need anything but a regular id if you're over 18 and with good credit. Good luck
