  1. you can bargain over the prize

  2. See my response to your other post: I would pitch in at £2000. Remember, most sales staff are on commission & don't want you to walk away.

A screen price at a garage is NEVER fixed - they expect to have to take less, so haggle. Regardless of how much you want it, tell them it's not the colour you wanted, it's not the spec you wanted, etc. Say you can't stretch to a penny over £2,000 & then wait for a response.

Go to http://www.parkers.co.uk & check out the used value of the make, model & year of car you're looking at so you know how much you should be paying.

Then go to http://www.autotrader.co.uk & find similar cars for sale cheaper - Print a couple out & take them to the dealer & use this as leverage for discount.

Once you've fixed a final price you're happy with, THEN ask for extras: A service or oil change, floor mats or a tank of fuel - it all helps!

Feel free to contact me if you want any further help.

  3. A good deal doesn't just depend on what you pay.

OK!, you don't want to pay £2695 (the asking price):

When is the next service due, if it's in the next 6 months ask if they'll do a service for you.

Has it got 12 months MOT?  If not get them to get it tested again.

Is it taxed?  Get them to throw in 6 months tax.

By now you should have the car down to £2400 or less in real terms.

    Good luck

  4. Always haggle. The price listed assumes they'll have to either drop it, or chuck in some extras (free tax and a tank of fuel, whatever)

  5. Too bad you are niot in USA now! The economy is slowing down so much that you can actually haggle the price.

is this a car dealer or a used car lot? With dealers, you might not be able to talk down the price, however, you can haggle the warranty time or extra services. In a used car lot, you should point out all the bad things in the car and then ask if he can compromise a little.

Remember, it never hurts to ask! The worst thing he can say is no and sell it to you at the known price.

    Good Luck!

  6. If it's a garage, it is in the interest of the sales man to get whatever he can above cost price. There is usually a load of 'head room' in the price he has given you. If you ask for £50 off he will definately give you it for the sake of a sale maybe even £100. Start with a low price that is somewhat right and haggle from there. Use methods like, "Ohhh I'm really interested in this, and I could take it away with me today". If the salesman shows hesitation, tell him you have seen a better price elsewhere and I promise he will sell it to you. One thing, once you have started walking, don't turn around!

  7. look at the car and say: well. i like it but how about 2000? ... You never know till you try to challenge the price and in this case you have to do it...
