  1. since you do not have current policy in force the easiest way to do it is this:  find the car you want to purchase (you will need a vin#) and go to a local indpendent agent and take out the policy on that auto.  then you have insurance and can take proof to the dealer when you pick up the car.

  2. Most car dealerships will not allow you to buy the car until you can prove that you have insurance.  Depending on the car dealership... they MIGHT allow you to be on the dealership's insurance (for a short period of time- ex a day or a weekend), but this is very rare.

If the car is only going to be in your name, the insurance policy will HAVE to be in your name only.

And it is NOT a stupid question.... the only stupid question is the question not asked!    :-)

So all in all, you need insurance on a vehicle before you can drive it off the lot (when purchasing it.... when just test driving a car you should be covered under the dealerships insurance).

I hope this is helpful and best of luck!!!

  3. You need insurance to drive the car, use one of the on-line e-insurance or Progressive insurance and you can get a policy in a matter of minutes and have a ID card in hand because you print it, with the actual Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the card. You will need the VIN and all the data about the car, (Year, Make, Model, Engine Size).

  4. Talk with insurance agent of whatever company you choose before actually buying the car. He/she will help you decide what coverages are best for you. If the car will be fnanced, the title holder requires evidence of comp and collision coverage.  While still at the dealership, contact the agent and have coverages put into effect.  Agent may require that you give money beforehand to be placed in escrow until your call.

  5. Yes, they'll sell it to you - they just won't let you drive it off the lot.

So you buy it, and it will sit there until you buy the insurance.  You have to pick out the car first, and have the vin number, for when you get the insurance.

Your agent can help you out with this.

  6. You don't need insurance to buy a car, only to drive it.  So make sure you have coverage in effect before you move it one inch.

Generally you can call your agent from the dealership with the information about the car and he can fax over your proof of insurance.  Of course, call him in advance and tell him you're looking at cars and give him all the rest of your information in advance.
