Question:

Buying a car without a driver's license in NH?

This is a very weird situation I'm in. I recently moved to NH. I have a driver's license from India.

I don't have a car so I want to buy one. But the dealer didn't let me until I got my license.

I have completed my written and vision test. Now, for my driving test, I don't know what car to take. I don't even know any people around here.

Its now the chicken or egg problem :

Without the car, I can't get license; without the license, I can't get the car.

Can I take a MA registered friend's car to the test ?? Does he have to accompany me ?? (I am legally allowed to drive in NH for 60 days since I moved in. And I have a foreign license.) Can I take a rental car ??

Any help would be appreciated.

  1. This is weird.

In the UK, no proof of having a full licence is required to buy a car. That is down to you, it is none of the sellers' business.

However, we can be fined heavily for using a TV without a licence, which is equally daft.

Nothing should prevent you from using a freinds car, or a rental, as logicaly the car you are driving could change every day.

    Best of luck,

    Bob

  2. I have never heard of a law that says in order to buy/own a car, one must have a drivers license.  I know that to drive a car, one must have a drivers license, but not to own one ?  There are thousands of people, companies, corporations, rental car companies, plumbers, electricians, the elderly, the disabled, that own cars and have no personal drivers license.  I am guessing that what the dealer wants to see is not a drivers licence per se' but a photo ID.  If they will accept nothing but a drivers license, I suggest you find another dealer
