  1. Here are some websites to buy a horse from. You could ask your instructor (if you have one) if he/she knows of anyone with a horse for sale. Try putting up a flyer at local tack shops and barns. You can find many good horses for $500 or less.

    www.equine.com (my favorite)

  2. LOL @ saddlesores answer... love the link x

  3. It shouldnt be that hard to find a mare un-broke for  500$....i just bought a tb mare for 900 and shes completley broke and the only reason they sold her was because she was "forward"(but what they didnt know is that she just has a long beautiful stride!;)

  4. I agree with 'animals are my life' - she is right.

Be aware though, that you must have lots of experience dealing with, backing and schooling young horses if you plan to buy a youngster to break. Basically, if you don't, you'll ruin the horse.

Why does it have to be a mare? If it's so you can breed, then don't buy a horse. Any horse you get for 500$ will be of no fit standard to breed, and anyway, this should be left to the studs.

  5. So you don't want a gelding because he will fight with your stallion not because you want to breed the mare.

Sorry can't help there since I live in the Central US.  Too bad because I have a green broke filly for sale for $450.

Oh and Saddlle sore....I got my world class arabian mare for $400.  LA GAITY is her registered name and both grandsires were US and Canadian Champions.  She was not shown much because she has a scar on her back leg where she had gotten tangled in barbed wire as a foal and because she is chestnut, but she is definitely breeding quality (though we do not breed her now because horse prices are too low).  But in general you are correct.  No one looks for breeding material with the intention of only spending $500.

EDIT:::::::: NO HORSE WORTH $500 is breeding quailty! I just read your answer to another question, you breed and break horses....... BYB ALERT!!!!!!!

Edit: Jeff: I understand that it does happen but it is an exception to the rule. I would never look for a mare to breed at $500 or less. I could just skip the hassle and by PMU foals! ;-)

Just wondering if you don't want to breed why arent you getting a gelding? You will have to keep it away from the stallion anyway unless you want babies in which case I'm back to my original point....  BYB = Backyard Breeder!

  7. well, try www.equinenow.com but i have to say your price range will be almost impossible! some adoptions cost more... you need to widen it more than that. maybe 2,000? sorry good luck!
