Question:

Buying a new car this month, how could I negotiate for a low price?

I am living in Ontario, Canada. Interested in buying either a Toyota Corolla 2009 (MSRP $19,900) or a Nissan Rouge 2008 (MSRP $24,123). How much can the dealer markup on these prices?

I don't know the invoice price for the vehicles, but I heard if you ask the salesman he might show you the factory invoice price before purchasing. Is this true? Are they obligated to? (Aware of sites to get this information but don't want to pay just yet)

Without knowing the invoice price that the dealer pays, and only seeing the sticker price, how do I start negotiating? I heard you should know already the invoice for you to bargain above it but way below MSRP and sticker.

For hot selling cars like the Corolla, how can I possibly bargain knowing that they know that I know the car could be sold for more than my offer? As for the Nissan there is no 2009 model... how do I negotiate this one?

Serious answers please, need the information for my trip to the dealership this week and next.

Thank

  1. go to kbb.com

  2. Wait until the end of the month, and be prepared to walk away.  They have quotas to achieve and if you walk away and say "look, here is my number if you change your mind" then odds are they will call you back last day last minute if they haven't made their goal and say "deal".
