Buying a new digital Camera, what brand and lense should I look for?

I have a budget around $1,300 and would like a digital camera that takes great quality pictures, has fast shutter speed, and can change lenses. I want the ability to take short and long range pictures. I plan on using it outside mostly. Are there better lenses for outdoor pictures?

  1. An SLR is what you want. Before buying an SLR I would suggest reading about some different models. An SLR is a big investment and you want to get it right.

My suggestion is that you go with Canon or Nikon. Both brands are well-known for their cameras and have a great selection of lenses. Also, it's quite easy to get used lenses for these brands.

With $1300 you have a few options. Your first option is to get an entry-level body and spend some more on lenses. Your second option is to get a prosumer body and have little left over for lenses. Your third option is to get a used previous-generation prosumer off of eBay and spend the rest on lenses.

Since you're starting out I'd go with the first or third options. You'll only be keeping a body for a few years but a good set of lenses will last you for ages.

So, for bodies in the first category I'd look at the Nikon D60 (~$600 with lens) and the Canon XSi (~$700 with lens). For the second category I'd look at the Canon 40D (~$1200 with lens) or the Nikon D80 (someone correct me if I'm wrong). For the third category I'd check out the Canon 30D (~$650 on eBay).

Once you've researched those cameras and have an idea of what you want you should go into a store and try them out. Once you've tried them out you can decide on the camera for you.

Once you have your body picked it's time to choose lenses. If you want to take short and long range pictures you're going to need a wide-angle and a telephoto. As a beginner the 18-55mm lens that comes with most SLRs will be fine for your wide angle. For the telephoto you'll want something that's around 70-300mm. One thing to note is that if you do go Canon you'll no doubt be looking at the Canon EF 75-300mm lens. To be honest, it's not a very good lens, and it's certainly not worth the $350 they charge in stores for it. However, if you do find it used for around $100 it'll be worth the price. A better option would be the Canon 70-300mm. I think it's about $500 so you should be able to afford it if you go with the entry-level bodies.

    I hope that helps!

  2. well i would go to camera shop and ask for help and then choose which one is best. I know that the higher pixels is the best for clarity. take care.
