Question:

Buying a truck out of state. What should I do to make the deal safe!?!?

I have just purchased a truck from a dealer in Florida. She looks great and has only 1 original owner.

This if my first purchase this large from someone not in my area. I would like to do it correctly. I offered to purchase using a credit card (that way I could stop payment within a month if I had to), yet he said the fees would be quite high, which I could believe.

He would ideally like a bank transfer, which I have no problem doing. Is there anything I should do to make this deal as safe as possible? Should I have something to have him sign?

THANKS!

  1. Did you do any research on the dealer or bother to have the vehicle inspected by an independent party? I would make absolutely sure they are legitimate and reputable and that the vehicle is all they say it is before making payment.

  2. I would be very leary of sending money in a bank transfer or wire transfer unless I was 199% certain this was a legit dealer with a legit license and bank account.  If they ask for moneygram, western union, or any other type of payment run as fast as your little legs will carry you.

Check the state DMV to ensure they are a real, licensed dealer.

While it is not uncommon for dealer to accpet wire transfers for out of state payment (I have done it a dozen or so times), it is also something to be very careful about.
