Hi

I was browsing on ebay as I am interested in buying a cheap website and seeing what i can do with it!

Just for experimental interest..I am a business student and therefore hopefully in time desire to make profit on a website.

I went onto ebay and saw templates selling for quite cheap, where the seller hands over the log in details etc and gives the website to you.

Why are these selling chear..arounf £15 to £100?

If i was to take this website on.. the same site could possibly be sold to someone else.. couldnt it? therefore would be a duplicate site..

thanks x

  1. Hi, i'd suggest trying Microsoft Office Live Basics - it's the easy way to get started on the Web and is free!

You get; free domain name and Web hosting, easy-to-use web site design tools to easily create and update your own website, 500 MB of Web site storage space, 25 branded e-mail accounts and web site reports/statistics.

There is also the option to upgrade to Office Live Essentials or Office Live Premium which have more space, more emails, and more tools.

Read more about it and see example sites here http://www.newbiztips.net/webhosting.asp...

Good luck with your ideas! Rebecca

  2. I would personally suggest that you don't buy a website that is already built without proof of income and traffic. Otherwise it is more beneficial to build a site from scratch around your own interests.

There are a few great web hosts that offer great assistance and tools to build a site that will meet your expectations. If building a site is appealing to you, I would strongly suggest that you look at several hosts to find the best match. Comparing features side-by-side then comparing prices will ensure that you get the best fit for your needs and the most value for your money. If you'd like, you can see an example through the web host I use for business and us it in your comparisons. http://find.sitesell.com/UnstoppableDrea...

  3. yeah its a template

the guy selling it will have knocked up some simple coding then sells it to whoever will buy it...

so there could be hundreds of websites that all look and operate the same...

there is nothing to guarantee his code is wp-compliant either.

professional websites and are compliant to a set standard and are verified to make sure the code is correct.

but you can knock a website up using dodgy and incorrect code... it will still work but it wont be right...

kind of like bad english - you can read it and make sense of it- but its not correct.

i wouldn't recommend buying one of these templates - i cant see how you could make money from it... the person you try and sell to could just go buy one off ebay themselves...

the only way you could make money would be the content you put on that website - but if your no good with code again it wont be compliant and your selling somebody dodgy goods...

  4. yeah it can be sold to somebody else also. so you need to take copy rights & trade mark law for that then it would be no problem.

If he has issued copy rights on this site to you it can't be duplicated.

Selling & buying the sites could be their business. so they could sell the sites around £15 to £100.

  5. You will want to go to http://www.godaddy.com and buy your domain name - you can get one for about nine dollars for a year.  You can also get a free web page on yahoo and forward your link to your domain name.  Godaddy has an excellent support staff so if you have questions you can always call them 24/7.

The web is a great way to go into business - good for you!

  6. You are quite right - buying a template site will mean that the content is (at least at first) probably a duplicate of existing content.

The point is that these are templates. They are designed to be customized by you afterwards, to differentiate the content from what is already out there. They can be a good way to get started, though, as the seller has already gone through the necessary steps to get it up and running.

Just a little background before you make your final decision. A free provider like Awardspace.com will provide you with everything that you need for free. The only thing that you should need to add is a domain name.

These are cheap : less than £10 if you look around.

Of course, you'll need to configure the site - adding a blog (like Wordpress) or a content management system - but this is easy enough for those willing to put the effort in to learn.

(A good book is : Just Enough Web Programming http://www.squidoo.com/jep#module4923867...

Since you're in the UK, a for-pay option, with great support, and templates for you to build a site with is 1&1 (http://www.1and1.co.uk).

I would tend to stay away from template sites, and PLR (Private Label Rights) content until I had the skills to really change it up and make it stand out.

    Hope this helps.

    Best,

    Guy
