Question:

Buying an older house?

I love older houses. I'm looking to purchase one as my first home. They are roomy well built homes. However renovations can get costly. I will be living in a very rural area in North Carolina. Is there a loan program that will allow me to purchase and renovate a home that is more than 100 years old? I don't want to restore it because there are no pictures of what it used to look like, but completely renovate it. It is a historical home althought it is not listed with the historal society in this area. Can someone tell me how to make my dream come true?

  1. I know historical societies and even govt programs are available (check your states or county's website) if you want to restore it, but since you want to renovate it I do not think any assistance will be given to you.  By renovating it you are "destroying" the history of the home, and the history is what these agencies are trying to save.
