  1. get a road bike.  there is nothing more beautiful and s**y than a trim girl in her bike togs out there pedalling with the boys.  you will be very popular

  2. look at gt and schwinn they have some great product gt has reasonable prices too

  3. Yeah go to local bike shop and look for something like a Giant Rock or next up Boulder in 14" size. Happy cycling

  4. First of all avoid department store bikes like the plague. They are cheaply made, often have non standard parts, and are usually assembled by people who have little skill or interest in doing a proper job. Some bike shops won't even work on them because they are more time consuming to repair than a quality bike.

Go to a real bike shop instead. In fact, go to several bike shops and look around. You may be surprised to find out that an entry level bike from a shop can be had for as little as $300 or less. While this is more than your typical $100 department store bike you'll be getting a much better machine that will give you years of service. Plus shops usually throw in a 30 day tune up and often free minor adjustments for the life of the bike. Plus, if problems do happen you'll have access to professional mechanics who are often cyclist themselves. They can give you tips and advise that you'd never get in a big box store.

As for brands you'll find that bikes within similar price ranges usually have comparable frames materials and levels of components. However if I was really pressed to recommend one brand over another I might suggest you look at TREK. They make a quality product and offer an incredibly wide variety of bicycles and price points. Their guarantee is nothing to sneeze at either.

Lastly, you say you "only like mountain bikes." Where are you planning on riding? If it's mostly off road then that style of bike may be perfect for you. But if you're going to be mostly on the road then another style of bike, perhaps a hybrid, may be better. Yet another reason to visit bicycle shops. To see what's actually available in modern bicycles.
