Question:

Buying fabric online + making curtains?

I was on eBay looking at fabric, (I do random things when I'm bored) and I have also been looking for curtains over the past few weeks. I haven't seen any curtains that I like so far and if I have they have been stupidly priced.

How easy is it to make your own curtains using fabric like this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Pink-Smartie-Design-Curtain-Fabric_W0QQitemZ120159428298QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item120159428298&_trkparms=39%3A1|66%3A2|65%3A3&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14.l1318

I also have a sheet of 'black-out' fabric loosely tacked onto my current curtains, can I reuse the 'black-out' fabric and stitch it onto my newly made curtains?

Thanks.

  1. The only consideration about the blackout fabric is it may show through something as light in color as the fabric you linked to.  I like that fabric, by the way. It would make great curtains.

I actually never buy curtains. I buy sheets.  If you look at a flat sheet, it has a large seam where the head goes.  Split the edges of that seam, and you have a place for your curtain rod to go through.  Flat queen sheets make great curtains for large windows and reach the floor in a formal length.  Twin sheets are great for smaller windows. They are a bit shorter, so I usually hem them.  You can make tie-backs with the extra fabric.  I sometimes just use the sheets as if they are sewing fabric - I did some curtains for my kitchen by using my rotary cutter to cut thin strips from one sheet and then used fabric glue to attach them to the other, uncut sheet.  It made some great striped curtains that cost less than $10 to make.

  2. Personally I would never use sheets on my windows. The fabric is way too thin to use on a window. And I think it still looks like a cut up sheets. I have found great fabric at great prices at Hobby Lobby to use for curtains.

The whole trick about making curtains is measuring and pressing. You best to buy a book or better yet get some at your library about making curtains so you can have step by step directions.

Yes you can re use the black out fabric. It could show through and make the curtain fabric look different.
