Question:

Buying first set of clubs?

I've been using a set I got at a 'sports exchange' store. Now that my game has come along nicely, I want to invest in a new set of clubs. What do you recommend for a recreational player who doesn't want to spend an obscene amount of money?

  1. Look on Ebay.  I've gotten almost all of my clubs off their.  The only ones I didn't get were one of my hybrids, my sand wedge, and my putter.  Although there are several items on ebay where the loft and lie angles are standard which fit my swing, you can have them fit to your specifications depending on how much you want to pay.

  2. Depending on where you live I have a nice set of men's golf clubs for sale. Full set with bag.

  3. I would avoid purchasing a complete set or package deal, and instead focus on finding individual components that are better suited to your specific needs and style.

If you golf with others, ask to take a look at their equipment and maybe even a few swings. Make a note of what you do or don't like. Visit a couple local pro shops (WITHOUT your credit cards or checkbook!) and try to get your hands on a wide variety of drivers, fairways, hybrids, irons, and putters/wedges.

Whatever feels best in your hand and will make you more confident on the course is probably going to work well for you. Check online for prices (Rock Bottom Golf - http://rockbottomgolf.com - is one of my favorites) and go with the best deal.

That said, here are a few specific models that I often hear recommended for golfers looking to upgrade their equipment and still be able to afford a round or two:

    $100 (or so) Drivers:

    Nickent 3DX

    Cleveland HiBore

    Orlimar Fury

    Adams Insight BUL 5000

    Hippo Hex 2

    Irons:

Take a look at what Adams has to offer - Tight Lies and GT 500 in particular.

    Best of luck!

  4. First of all let's define "obscene": if you are looking to buy name brand, retail AND have them fitted you had better be prepared to spend $1400 - $1800 (w/o bag, putter thru driver). This is still much cheaper then the most expensive clubs that would run any where from $2500 - $3000.

If you are going to shop on ebay/Cragslist you would look at about 1/3 of  that (used of course).

If you are going to buy the Walmart special you are looking at $250 - $450 (definitely NOT recommended).

Essentially, you get what you pay for. If you want the whole fitting process from a retailer then expect that you will not leave w/o spending less then $1400. Is that obscene??? It would be tough to spend less then that ANYWHERE.

  5. Pick up your set from ebay,  I got my entire set, (used) but in great shape from driver to putter and a bag from just under $300.00     Callaway steelhead woods, cleveland irons and nike putter.
