Question:

Buying glasses without lenses?

Hey y'all.

I need to purchase some prescription glasses, but my local opticians don't have a great choice.

I've found awesome frames on a website, and they give me the choice of having them WITHOUT lenses.

I'm just wondering if I can buy these lens-free frames online, take them to my local opticians, and have them fit in some lenses for me?

If yes, will this be costly? The frames are quite expensive already, so I don't want to end up wasting money.

NOTE: My Rx is strong (both eyes are -8.00 I think).

  1. I do for my patients, but more often, I'll order a frame they see somewhere else for them. If I were you, I'd call up your local optician's office and find out if they can get that frame for you and what their exchange police is. I order frames "for patient to view" all the time. That way they can try it on (it may look great on the website but not on your face!) and if you don't like it, your optician can return it for credit. In my office, I have to charge you shipping, it's usually about $15 for both ways, if you like it, I don't charge the shipping, it's included in the frame price. By doing it that way, your optician will be able to see the frame and let you know if your Rx is too strong for that frame (you know, we try to get you into the smallest, roundest frames to keep your lens thickness down). And your supporting your local optician's office (we appreciate that!).

If that isn't an option (for whatever reason), most opticians will put lenses in a frame you bought somewhere else, some charge a little extra, some do not, I don't but you need to check with your local office to be sure that they will do it, and cost. I charge $175 for high index 1.67 aspheric lenses (thinner, lighter, flatter).

I hope this gives you some ideas...
