Question:

Buying horse?

I am buying an OTTB from a business who takes these horses off the track and re-sells them as prospects. (Bits and Byes Farm in Georgia). In order to buy this horse, I have to wire $3,000 to the owner. I know that wiring is a very risky process, and I want to make sure that I am not being scammed. Have you heard of/done this process in buying a horse before? Is it common, or do you think I am just being scammed? Thank you for your help.

  1. Normally those type of horses are free or very cheap.

Just be careful of unsound horses that might need a lot of time in order to turn them around for profit.  Having a starting price of 3K doesn't give you much room.

  2. Look at the CANTER web site for OTTB's

There are hundreds of them and $3000 is alot to pay for one.

Many very nice horses go for $500 and up to around $1500.

Depending on what area you are in.

There are many places that place OTTBs and I have never heard of that farm.

I would not wire money to them for a horse.

You should pay for a vet check to be done on the horse and never buy one sight unseen. Find someone who can go and inspect the horse for you.

  3. Personally, i would never wire money to a farm in order to buy a horse. I would go to the stables, meet with the owner of the horse (or stables) and pay in check or cash, after you get the papers and have the horse checked by a vet for injury or damage, especially since he is off the track.

I hope this answer helps you out.

  4. don't wire your money before you buy this horse. go and spend some money on a vet, and get the vet to go and check out this horse, too make sure you are getting a sound horse, one that is not broken down and or too lame to ride. it might cost you $300.00 dollars but it is better than getting burned for $3,000.00.
