Question:

Buying local for Christmas?

Has anyone tried to keep a green Christmas by buying all presents from local businesses? As in locally produced - works of art, arts and crafts, music, gift baskets, wine, etc. Thought it would benefit the local artisans and keep the consumerism down this year. Would be hard with small children, but I was wondering if anyone had tried this, if for no other reason than to s***w with the corporate commercialism or save on transportation of massive goods.

  1. I have tried this. It actually helped our economy by way of advertisement as opposed to the revenue I supplied the businesses. As I purchased local art and displayed it in my home and business, others inquired as to where they too could obtain such merchendise. This led to an influx of business for such art dealer/producers.

  2. Been a local shopper for many years. Great small shops and galleries always have unique items and local artists benefit. There isn't much that can defeat the consumerism beast, but we try. Good for you.

  3. Rock on PD! I'm actually doing that this Christmas for the first time. I'm usually an internet shopper, looking for the best deal. But, I decided, who really cares if you save $2 on that 'whatchamacallit'? I mean, I'd rather support our local businesses and my community and the people who are my neighbors. We are lucky to have a local artisans shop (my town is only 15,000 people) and the downtown is just starting to come back with quaint locally owned shops...I'm so glad! We also have a small book store which stocks kids' books written by a local author, so that helps with presents for the kids. Anyway, I think it's a great idea and it's actually making my shopping a lot less stressful and more fun!

  4. I don't do this for the reasons you state.

I buy local because I don't support products made in Communist china.

But since everything seems to be made there, i will probably have to buy stuff made by local artisans.

  5. I loved my Xmas in a small town in Colorado, we were all snowed in and no one got out for corp. shopping that year. we all had given baked goods, home-made toys , pot holders and all the real true meaning of Christmas or the return of the sun. it was the best and I'll always keep it in my heart as one of those all time memories!

  6. I've been buying about 90% of my Christmas presents locally for the last few years, mostly because I hate the malls and I don't want to pay for shipping from online stores.  It's worked out well for me.. no crowds and no long lines..
