Hi all!

I want to buy a new DSLR camera, for personal use. I hope to start a photography class in the fall. I have a good eye for photography, though mainly chase my daughter around the place taking shots of her in motion!!

I am quite interested in something like the Sony Alpha 350. But would like to buy a bundle with several lenses if possible.

ANYWAY long question short, what would you recommend I buy?! What would you buy if you were in my situation, ($1000 or less if possible!).

  1. The best beginner camera in the sub $1000 market is the Canon Xsi, which for about $799 comes with an 18-55mm kit lens.  That however does not leave you much for any additional lenses.

The Nikon D60 with the 18-55 lens and a 55-200 lens runs about the same price.

If you want an inexpensive fast lens to freeze you daughter in action, I suggest to either one you add a 50mm f1.8 lens (approx $90) for some nice shots without blur.

  2. Go to a good camera store and handle some of the cameras in your price range.  You will know the one for you when you hold it in your hands and see which is the easiest for you  to use the controls.

Consider the Canon XTi.  It has been a very popular model and is a good beginner camera.  It will leave you enough to get another lens, too.   And then take lots of pics of that little one.  They do grow up way too fast!

You may find that the Nikon D40 with the super zoom 18-200 mm VR lens will fit both your budget and requirements for good lens coverage .. this with only one lens rather than two (18-55 mm and 55-200 mm)

  4. You can;t go wrong with a Nikon or a Canon. My son is a pro and uses a Canon. Nikon has long been the standard.

Take a look at some of these. You'll find something for your budget and future.

Take a TON of that daughter. They grow up far too quickly...
