Question:

Buying my first handgun?

I am not old enough to buy a handgun yet, but have been doing research on handguns I would like to own as a first once I am able to purchase one. I would like to know what a good first semi-automatic handgun would be. I am pushing toward either a .380 such as a PPK or a 9mm such as a Sig P226 or Walther P99. Does anyone have any other suggestions? (remember, .380 or 9mm).

  1. Glock or Smith & Wesson these guns hold there value better than ths others. and are better guns

  2. 9mm.  The ammo is a little easier to get and wider variety of ammo.  Also is you run out the odds are better that the person you are shooting with will have extra ammo and it will be 9mm.  I think that 9mm is also a little stornger ammo being betwwen 115gr and upto 135 even.

  3. If you've never fired a handgun before, I wouldn't recommend a .380 or 9mm. Maybe a .22, get used to that first.

  4. Depends on what you want a handgun for.  A first handgun is always a .22 LR.  Since you lean toward the semi-auto consider the Walter P-22 or Sig Mosquito.  The Glock Model 19 9mm is a good first gun.  It is user-friendly, reliable, accurate and high cap.  Also, 9mm ammo is even cheaper than .380 acp ammo.

Take your gun safety course and as soon as you can, get your CCW.

    Good luck.

  5. Go shoot as many guns as you can prior to making your decision.

Many gun ranges will allow you to "rent" guns for the day to try them out.

I highly recommend you do this because each gun feels different depending on your frame, your hand size and your grip.

What feels great to one person may suck for another.

My dad for example cant shoot a coly python for c**p but shoots his S&W model 19 really well. Many folks would generally consider the Python a better handgun.

I cant shoot glocks for c**p. I shoot my Taurus, my S&W and my Kimber just great. Glocks are great guns but I'll never buy one because they just dont work for me.....

this is the same with caliber. I think the 9mm is a great first handgun to OWN if you've shot before.

The first handgun you should SHOOT should probably be a smaller caliber like a .22. I recommend the Ruger 22/45 it's a .22 caliber built on a .45 frame and is often used for training in police and military.

Many manufacturers make great guns. You cant really go wrong with any of the big names:

    glock

    smith and wesson

    Taurus

    Springfield

    Browning (Hi-Power)

    Sig Sauer

    H&K

    Beretta

    and others....

Have fun and get the one that you fall in love with. Dont be swayed  by other peoples personal tastes. A gun is like a car in that regard.

  6. I'd start with a .22 and work up. Check out Ruger's Mark line.
