Question:

Buying my first home?

I'm in the process of buying my first home. I'm trying to think of everything I need to do prior to moving in, and the things I'm going to have to buy. I know I have to turn on the utilities, cable etc. But, what about trash service? What are some things that you don't necessarily think of that you need to buy right away? Any tips for a newbie? :) Thanks!!

  1. First of all congratulations on buying a new home. Dont worry about the problems it can be solved automatically.

Every house has a different problem, and it can be solved itself once you move in. Trash service can also be solved when you move inside the home.

  2. Where i stay the water and the trash are both combined into one monthly bill and when you turn the water on the water company will notify the trash company

  3. I think the biggest thing is where you are moving from and where to.  If you are coming from an apartment and moving into a single family home there are probably a lot of tools and yard equipment you will need to purchase.

If you are purchasing a condo there is very little difference between the condo and an apartment.

  4. In terms of trash services call your local municipal offices they can tell you about that.  Make sure you have a monthly budget because you have more expenses than when you rented.  If your state has property tax and you don't have taxes escrowed through your mortgage then you have to save for those - same goes for homeowner's insurance.  Make sure you change your address at the post office.

Don't rush into buying a lot of furniture - wait until you are comfortable with your financial situation.

    Good luck and enjoy.

  5. Be sure to go to the post office and fill out a form to have your mail forwarded, then notify everyone of your new address.  A lot of bills have a place for change of address.  If you have any magazine subscriptions, you'll have to let them know of your change of address.  Do you get the newspaper where you live now?  If so, tell them you are moving.  A lot of things won't occur to you until you get moved in and unpacked.  When you pack, label your boxes clearly and pack one or two boxes with things you might need on move in day.  Chances are you won't get everything unpacked in one day.
