http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/centerfire_rifles/model_700/model_700_VTR.asp

I am unsure of what exact scope to use i hear Leopold and nikon are very nice scopes, but what model do you think?

  1. Remington are the best guns ever made!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. it depends on what you are hunting if it is game like deer and black bear i would suggest the 308 win or 338 federal but if you live in the northern united states or canada and will most likely be hunting elk moose deer black bear and brown bear i suggest a variable 338 caliber rifle such as the 338 win mag because the 338 win mag is an extroardinary caliber is very variable performance wise and is also quite a kicker with max power loads but you can buy low power loads or load it down yourself and use it from everything from deer to moose and if you live in heavy brush you do not need a scope bigger than 4x power but if you are not ready for the recoil of a 308 or larger i suggest slower bigger heavier calibers like the 45-70 if you are sensitive to recoil and yeah you are off on a good start to picking a gun and if you want a good scope go with leupold trijicon or nikon monarch all the others can just not compete with their performance

  3. This completely depends on what you plan on doing with the rifle. The .308 is a good caliber for taking down your medium to large North American game.  But if you plan just to punch holes in paper you are going to want something smaller as the rounds are fairly expensive nowadays.

If you have never shot a rifle before you're going to want something smaller then a .308.  It is a rather large caliber and it is harder to get new shooters to aim correctly and not flinch when expecting the kick.

  4. That is a really cool rifle. I love the triangle barrel contour. And 308 Win.

Leupold VX II 3-9X40 is the most popular all -around scope on the market by those who shoot.

  5. I like a more traditional rifle but it's not place to p**s on your parade. I've read quite a few reviews and it seems like a good, solid, and accurate rifle. I think it would be a buy if you like the design.

It's certainly nicer than most people's first centerfire as the older generation bought military surplus and the younger generation now are buying Savages, Howa, and Mossy that cost $300-400. And you're adding on a good scope at that.

Leupold or Nikon would be fine in a 2x7, 3x9, 4x12, or something like that.

A 308 may not be the best "first rifle" as that usually goes to the 22lr. But as a first "centerfire", I don't think it can be beaten provided you're looking to kill medium sized game like deer or blackbear. The ammo is just as cheap...or just as expensive (whichever way you want to look at today's prices) as the other handfull of popular rounds. A 308 is not a heavy recoiling round so there's no need at all to go smaller.

  6. Ask the guys at gun center what they recommend they are great. For your first gun i wouldn't recommend anything to high powered like a 308. you should start a little smaller. Also, if your hunting big game like deer only a few counties here in WNY allow center fire rifles for big game hunting. Ive been hunting in WNY for 30yrs.

  7. You are off to an excellent start. The 700 in 308 will always have a place in your gun case and is good for every thing up to bear.

Nikon in a 3x9x40 would be a good match for your gun and environment (woods/brush). I personally like the Bushnell Elite Series because of the light gathering but the Nikon is no slouch there as well. Good hunting!

  8. Remington 700 VTR in .308 is a nice firearm. Is it for you? That depends? What are you shooting at. Deer, Hog or bear?  Then the .308 would be fine.... If your varmint hunting or just target shooting then I suggest a VTR in .223... The ammo has plenty of power and reach for small critters....

  9. I have the exact same gun with a nikon scope. It is phenomenal!!!!!! It was the second rifle i bought and it was totally worth it. Ive shot many deer with it and the farthest ive ever had to track one was around 50 60 yards but it was very easy because of the blood trail. Buy it! Ull love it
