Question:

Buying new irons.?

I am a beginner golfer, and i've been to the driving range about 10 times, and had a few lessons. I found some clubs that a guy at my club is selling. He has Callaway X-tour forged irons, 3-PW, with TT dynamic Gold x100 shafts. Someone told me that you have to have a high swing speed for these shafts, but i was wondering if, since i am a beginner, would that really matter just for learning the basics. He is selling all 8 clubs for $300 and they have only 1 season of use and are in great condition. So even if the shafts are hard to use, will it be worth it for just the heads and i can get new shafts? Thanks

  1. i would buy those you may be a starter but you should get a good deal like that and just practice a lot

  2. I wouldnt worry too much about it, the old pings always had x shafts in them, but they may be a lil harder to hit than a regular stiff shaft. As long as you get a good deal and can get rid of them without much loss. If they are pro series you may have a lil more trouble with them, since they blades.

  3. no you won't be able to hit a TOUR model iron or forged for that matter, most pros have irons that are easier to hit, anyone who disagrees is a moron.

I am a 3 handicap (I usually shoot 75)  and had these clubs, and I got ones that were easier to hit, I am willing to say you are not that good. BAD DEAL! don't buy them

  4. Yes the X100 Shafts are designed for a golfer who has a swing speed in excess of 105 MPH.......Will it drastically affect you and your game while learning.....probably only minimally.  If you think they are a good buy and want to buy them....by all means do so

  5. X-tour forged is the most player-like irons ever made by Callaway.  If you are really serious about playing golf and have the patience to learn the proper way to swing, I can't pick out a better set of irons for you.  All other "forgiving" clubs out in the market help you hit the ball better....but with X-Tour, you can be sure that the ball flies straight because of your proper swing, not your "forgiving" club.  It might be very difficult to learn at first, but it will progressively make you a better ball hitter in a long run.

TT (True Temper) DG (Dynamic Gold) X100 seems to be on the stiff side, even for steel shaft.  It goes from R100 to S100 to X100 (reguar, stiff, x-stiff) by the way.  However, would a beginner know the difference between R to S to X?  Probably not.  Don't worry too much about the shaft flex.

So, I think you should go for it!...  especially when the complete set is only $300.

    !!! IMPORTANT!!!

Go back to the seller and ask him if the lie and loft are standard.  Many X-Tour clubs are sold as customized, and you want to be sure that you are buying the standard spec, not something that was fitted for some other person.

Get the serial number off the club (located near the hosel) and call Callaway Golf at 800-588-9836 to check its authenticity and lie/angle.

  6. dont listen to tto42, hes the moron. just because its tour doesnt mean squat. getting clubs that are hard to hit can make you a better ball striker if you have the talent to actually learn to use them. that being said you have only gone to the range ten times and if you do get this set you will omst likely mishit every shot, which will likely hurt your hands every time. Having extra stiff shafts also wont help with the forgiveness.I play forged irons and they have helped me drop 5 strokes in about amonth, but ive been playing for 6 years. All in all this set is most likely far beyond your skill level to hit effectively, but it seems like a pretty good deal so you can always sell them if tehy dont work out and make your money back. And you never know they could help you improve your game significantly, but you would have to stick with it and keep from getting frustrated.
