  1. If you are sentimental and want the beer mug you drank out of, or whatever you did with it(after 19 years of visiting the Oktober Fest, nothing surprizes me anymore) then depending on which tent you are in, you could try and hide it in your back pack and sneak it out. BUT, due to security reasons the size of back packs is controlled. And trust me the last thing you want is to have to deal with the Security Guys. You give them a hassle and the next thing you know you are dealing with the German Police. Good, back to your mug. If you really want the one you have used, then ask your waitress/waiter(they too have seen it all) and if you are not too drunk or unruly they can arrange to take you to a side door and let you out with your mug in hand without a hassle from the security apes. This is of course will cost any where from 5 to 10 Euros as a 'tip'.

Now, if you just want a mug from the Oktober Fest check out the web site; www.oktoberfest.de(also in English). You can order mugs there. If you want a mug(the tents use glass) from a specific tent then go to the souvenir stand located at the front of the tent to buy one(new, not used of course). Many tents still sell the old style ceramic mugs - these are no longer used because they break easier than the glass ones. At least that is what a waitress at the fest told me.

Now, I know some 'expert' will answer that the tents still use ceramic mugs and blah, blah, blah. Yes, some still use ceramic mugs, BUT that is normally in a resevered area that 'Joe-Tourist' can not easily wander into.  Not sure what the deposit thing is about? I know that is done at many fests in Germany. But, at the Oktorber Fest when you are inside a tent you do not pay a deposit on the glass(mug) because it is very hard, if not impossible to sneak one out.

Another Tip; To try and get the mug of your dreams I would suggest visiting the fest grounds during the week. Less crowded and a bit easier to do the 'Side Thing' with a waitress/waiter.  This method has worked for me.

  3. During the Oktoberfest you can visit all the stores round this area and buy there one. Also every time you get a beer, you are paying some deposit for the mug. So you can keep it.

  4. Yes.  When you first get a mug of beer (Ein Mass, bitte), you will put down a deposit on the mug.  Actually, the mug is a crockery 1 liter stein.  The deposit is about $4.50.  When you drink your last beer of the night, you turn in your ticket and they will reimburse you the deposit.

  5. HI,

unfortunately tbugs is not right about the deposit. There are places who take a mug deposit, but not at the Oktoberfest.

But you can buy the official mugs at any beer tent. They have little souvenir shops in the entrance area.

Just you cannot buy "the" mug you have been drinking from. And there are guards at all the exits to make sure you don't take beer mugs with you without buying them.
