I've been using Nikon all my life and I guess I want a change.

Are there much differences compared to Nikon?

Any place I can score it cheap?

  1. Canon doesn't make the 40D that is Nikon. Both Canon and Nikon make very good camera's.Wich ever one feels right in your hands you should buy.

  2. Nothing against Canon but if you have Nikon and Nikon accessories you may be better off staying with that and upgrading. I have been using Nikon since the 70's and love it still

  3. What kind of change are you looking for? Canon and Nikon are constantly trying to trump each other, and that means that whatever models they are competing against each other have top of the line features and stunning performance. The biggest difference between Canon and Nikon DSLRs is the way the image is processed. Canon typically produces a softer image from the camera, which many feel is better in the long run for post processing. Nikon will produce a sharp image in the camera, and that is fine too. I guess it all really matters on what you are shooting and what your post processing is like.

I upgraded from a Canon 20D to the 40D and I'm completely in love! I purchased the body a few months ago from Amazon for somewhere around $950, but that is because I already had some killer lenses to use with it. Amazon also has a good deal for the body and an IS lens.

  4. hotdogse is incorrect.  Canon does make the 40D.   Nikon makes the D40.  Can be confusing!

If you have a lot of Nikon lenses, you would be better off staying with Nikon.  But if you have only one or so, switching to Canon would be okay if that is what you want to do.

Go to a real camera store, and handle this 40D and see how you like it.  You will know whether it is for you when you hold it in your hands.

  5. If you're buying new camera equipment just for a change, I kind of get the feeling true photography is not what you're interested in; but owning different camera equipment is. If this is the case, you'll probably be satisfied for a little while with your new Canon. If this is not the case, you'd probably be better off by staying with Nikon.
