Buying trousers in France - what size?

I have a 36 inch waist (the usual UK measurement is inches) - what is the measurement in French sizes (they seem to be an unidentified number from 42 to 56 - certainly not centimetres)?

I'm guessing it is about a 52, but can't find a conversion table anywhere!
