Buzzing sound coming from the gas tank on my 96 cherokee sport, bad relay/fuel pump?

This has been going on for some time and I have been told not to worry about it from other cherokee owners, although it has become quite annoying lately. The buzzing sound is coming from under my back end in/around my gas tank. Is this a bad relay or fuel pump? And is there anyway to minimize this sound or get rid of it all together. It is in no way effecting the drive ability of the car, but I fear that it might soon. Does any one have any suggestions for this symptom? Thanks in advance,

if it's an old noise, it's just the fuel pump running.  if it's a new noise you may want to get your fuel pump replaced as it may be going out, which will strand you whereever it dies.

remember to replace your fuel filter, that can reduce the number of times your pump goes on you.

The noise you are hearing is the fuel pump in the tank. It could be one of two things. The pump is working harder to pump fuel due to a restricted fuel filter or just the normal wear and tear of the pump. Try replacing the fuel filter first and if that doesn't help then replace the in-tank pump.

Your pump is going bad.  It is NOT normal to hear your fuel pump whining no matter what the other r****d cherokee owners have told you.  Replace the pump as soon as possible.

not really even if you change the fuel pump it will lighten up some best thing is keep the tank full as much as possible to deaden the sound

those cherokee owners are wrong as wrong can be. it,s natural to hear the pump run when the key is on, but if it,s really loud, then the pump is getting ready to go. believe me, it will leave you sitting some day. you better just put another pump in.

The only thing in the tank is the fuel pump. some make more noise than others but if the noise is getting worse then the pump is about to fail.
