Buzzword first Classic winner for Mahmood al Zarooni
Mahmood al Zarooni, who only started training for Godolphin in March, achieved the double feat of a first Group One and Classic winner when Buzzword won the Deutsches Derby at Hamburg.
The victory for Buzzword capped a profitable weekend in Germany after Saeed bin Suroor’s Campanologist had won the Grosser Preis Von Lotto Hamburg the previous day.
Buzzword, who was running in his fourth European Classic of the season, was always prominent in the 20-runner field with jockey Royston Ffrench getting him quickly away from the stalls and settling in about fourth entering the straight. Buzzoword drew alongside the front-running Lamool and Zazou approaching the final furlong and was driven clear in the last 100 yards to win by one-and-a-quarter lengths. "My main concern was to get a decent position with such a big field,” Ffrench said. “Once I had managed that, the horse did the rest."
Al Zarooni had gone close to winning a Classic when Anna Salai was beaten a head in the Irish 1000 Guineas at the Curragh in May and he was in Ireland to saddle Miss Jean Brodie, who finished second to Snow Fairy in the Irish Oaks.
Diana Cooper, representing Godolphin at Hamburg, said: "Buzzword had a lovely draw in seven and Royston made best use of it. Buzzword was always up with the pace and he showed the turn of foot that he has to good effect. "He’s run consistently well throughout his career and it is great that he has now won at the top level.
"This is the first time that a foreign-trained horse has won the German Derby which gives Buzzord a place in history."
Overdose’s place in the history of Hungarian racing is already assured and, after 15 months off the track due to injury, the horse called the “Budapest Bullet” took his unbeaten career record to 13 when he won a five-furlong Listed race at Bratislava.
