By Hove, she’s got it: Crossfield Aoife victorious at Hove
Brighton and Hove Greyhound Stadium was the site of an action-packed race schedule yesterday. The 14-race card produced many interesting results, which drew the attention of the greyhound racing fans in attendance.
The first race of the afternoon was an A10 race that was held at 14:08 p.m GMT. Crossfield Aoife, a dark horse competitor whose odds were 3-1 coming into the race, won with a finish of 30.94 seconds. Coming out of trap four, Aoife quickly moved away from the competition. It was the ninth first-place win of Crossfield Aoife’s young career at Hove. Her last win came on 21 July, where she finished three lengths ahead of the rest of the pack.
Second place was won by Reenard Eric, who finished 1¾ lengths behind the winner in 31.08. Like Crossfield Aoife, his pre-race odds were also set at 3-1. Finishing in third was Swift Titus (7-1), who was 2¼ lengths behind Reenard Eric. The fourth-place finisher was Greycott Lynn, who finished just a shoulder behind third with finish of 31.26 to match.
Misterin Oak, the 5-2 favourite coming into the race, finished in 31.48 (2¾ lengths) to claim fifth place. It was a disappointing result for the pup, whose two-year record at Hove has been full of big wins and tough losses. Bringing up the rear was Killeigh Wiggy, who was one length behind Misterin Oak with a time of 31.56.
Next on the card was an A5 race that featured some very interesting finishes. The race was won by Harts Hill Carp, who odds makers listed as a long shot with 9-2 odds pre-race. He finished with a time of 30.80. The second place finish proved to be one of the highlights of this race, with Shades of Speed (3-1) and Malbay Logan (7-2) sharing the position in a dead-heat tie. Both finished in 30.84, which put them only a ½ length behind the winner.
The fourth-place finisher was Roxys Nod (5-1), whose 30.92 finish was 1 length behind the joint second place dogs. Black Kite (6-1) took fifth place a head behind Roxys Nod in 30.93. Finally, last place went to Lawlors Choice, who was considered as the 5-2 favourite going into this race. It was only the second last place finish of Lawlors Choice’s career at Hove.
The 15:07 A4 race featured joint favourites. Digie Star and Show Flower were both listed as 3-1 favourites before the race, but both dogs failed to deliver the predicted results. Big Time Greg (6-1) picked up a big time win in this race, finishing in 30.37. Greenacre Babs (4-1) placed second by a neck in 30.39.
The joint favourites finished third and fourth, respectively. Digie Star came in third with a time a 30.43, a ½ length behind second place. Show Flower wilted and took fourth place, ¾ lengths behind third in 30.49. Unlikely Billy (5-1) ended up in fifth with a 30.55 finish, placing him ¾ lengths behind fourth place. Smoking John (7-2) was anything but smoking in this race. He took sixth in 30.63, and finished one length behind Unlikely Billy.
Greyhound racing at Brighton and Hove will resume on 27 August at 10:30, when racing fans will be treated to another exciting 14-race card.
