  1. Let me inform you that preventing deforestation is the WORST action people can do with the exception the national parks and forest.

Why, because by preventing the harvesting of trees, you stop the benefit of growing trees economical, the way to increase forestland is to keep growing trees profitable. IF it isn't profitable, the land will be cleared for something to be profitable such as development or farmland.

Heavy deforestation is occurring in areas of developing countries. Here in the US we grow more fiber than we harvest annually, but if and when it becomes not profitable, private landowners will deforest their land to generate revenue is something else or develop it for business and farms.

Increasing global population is our worst enemy, because the demand for more land for homes and such. For example, higher population increases the demand for land, this is partly why timber companies have sold their large land holdings for the higher price of land and also because of the increasing regulations from the sustainable groups, How you ask, well the timber companies must procure wood to operate, they found a niche by selling all timber land to put the monkey of sustainable groups onto the backs of private landowners, whom only care about the MONEY!!! Therefore, the certified companies is really a joke and the products they sale in reality are no different than before.

Make no mistake their is no joke in forest management, but the certified groups are nothing more than 3rd parties making money over false policies, similar with what is going on with global warming today with carbon credit companies owned by Al Gore.

The only way to help in the deforestation problem in other countries is to change policies with free trade to stop importing goods that do not meet the same standards as US regulations. Then we would level the palying field and make forestry more valuable to continue.

  2. Deforestation has been occurring worldwide at a rate of about 13 million hectares per year or 130000 square km each year from 1990-2005.  The net loss of forests is decreasing due to planting of new trees.  Please see the link for a lot of information.  I actually had to read all of it and present on it for a sustainable forest management class.  Good luck!
