A fir tree holds water in its wood and bark and needles. But how much? Per pound, how much of a tree is water?

  1. Young trees have a high percentage water, like 70 when starting off.

    A mature tree will have very much less water, and a mature tree during drought will be dry enough to burn.


  2. It depend on a lot of things, such as the species, weather, time of year, and health of the tree. I'd say well over half for fir. In general the lighter the wood when dry the higher the moisture % when the tree is living.  In the wood industry moisture content is expersed as oven dry bias and can be confusing.  It is a comparsion of the woods dry weight comparied weight of the water in the wood, so if the wood is half water its moisture content is said to be %100
