Byron Bay clash of the titans
Byron Bay is all set to see a bit of action this week, as Australian golfing giants make their way to the coastal town to settle it out at the Nor East Australian Legends Tour Championship.
Competitors for the top prize include Ian Baker-Finch, Terry Price, Mike Harwood, Peter Fowler, Michael Clayton and Rodger Davis. Ian Baker-Finch has been the winner of the 1991 British Open.
Terry Price is currently the only Australian golfer to have bagged a victory on the European Senior Tour this year.
Tournament Director Mark Wilson looks forward to the clash of the titans.
“Where else can you see PGA Professionals with more than 300 Tour wins amongst them in the same place at the same time, not to mention in an atmosphere like no other,” he said.
Peter Senior, however, will be the biggest attraction of the tournament. Senior has been the oldest person to successfully battle off younger and more energetic rivals, along with the gale-force winds to lift the cup in The Lakes Golf Club history.
The event had been a mere fortnight ago. In the earlier rounds of the Australian Open (the tournament in question), play had been postponed for about three hours because of the fierce weather that had picked.
That made Senior’s triumph at the 2012 Emirates Australian Open all the more sweeter. He has gone on to prove that golf is a game for all ages.
Moreover, he demonstrated that younger players, though having that advantage in drive (that is they can hit the ball further than the older participants), do not make for undefeatable rivals as some would have it.
Former Professional Golf Association Tour of Australasia Order of Merit winner Ossie Moore called Senior’s feat an inspiration for them all.
“He has inspired us all, the way he goes about his business on the golf course hasn’t changed since his first win back in the 80’s, to his recent Australian PGA and Open victories”.
Moore also went on to add that competition here at Byron Bay will be intense. “Fowler, Harwood, Price, these guys are hitting it longer and straighter than ever before and now Pete has shown them they are still good enough to win”.
