Byron White of CYCA wins round robin stage of 2011 NSW Youth Match Racing Championships
Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA) sailor, Byron White, along with his crew members Hamish Hardy and Tom Koerner, grabbed the overall lead in the round-robin stage of 2011 NSW Youth Match Racing Championships on Saturday, August 6. The event is hosted by the CYCA management itself. White and his crew represented the club in the championship and sailed marvelously on Day One.
The Race Officer, Brian Brenac, had to wait before starting the race, as the breeze was too low to sail. He waited until the shifty seven to ten knots wind started blowing across the racing area. Carla Sexton (RPAYC) protested to the Race Committee about the weather conditions during their race with Tim Forbes-Smith (CYCA), however, the committee subsequently dismissed the protest.
Both White and hardy recently came back after participating in the Governor’s Cup in the United States of America and his return has been quite successful. White and crew grabbed seven wins and one defeat in the first day’s round robin formatted races. The overall lead in the round-robin stage will definitely boost the CYCA representing team’s confidence to perform better in the championships.
While speaking to the local media after their success in round-robin stage, White said, “We sailed really cleanly in the difficult conditions. The light and shifty westerlies kept clocking around all day and the pressure was up and down.”
He added, “Our toughest match was the one we lost to Reece Tailby (RPAYC). We were out of phase in the pre-start and he kept moving away from us. We managed to make up some ground on the next two legs but didn’t quite catch him.”
The current standings at the end of Stage One are given below:
Byron White - CYCA - 7 wins, one loss
Sophie Lahey - Southport YC - 6 wins, 2 losses
