Question:

C&C Cages for Guinea Pigs? =D?

So, I got some guinea pigs about a month ago for free from some neighbors who couldn't take care of them. There are two, fully grown, females. We got a cage from the previous owners which at first sight I thought was tiny! In fact, it's not even 7.5 sq feet like recommended! It's only 5 sq feet and I feel it would be cruel to keep them in there any longer. My parents shrugged it off saying, "Well, we're not buying a new one. Way too expensive." I had to deal with it. That was until I came across the the C&C Cage website. I was excited to hear they're really cheap and you can make them really large! I'm planning on telling my parents tonight, but they like it when I have a full plan of what to do so Im wonder about a few things.

When I googled sign stores for where I live, home depot came up! Would that be a place where I could find cloroplast cheap? And if not, what's a good cheap place? Also, what's the best chain store (target, walmart, etc) to get the cubes? We have a whole bunch near us so it won't matter for gas prices and stuff. Lastly, I think the two story cages are really cool and look like they provide more space and place for exercises. Are they a good thing to put in a cage and how do you do them?

Thanks for helping me!

  1. you could look on their websites there should be some prices there

  2. The http://www.guineapigcages.com/ website has a search feature on the left hand side of the page so you can look for sources in your area that carry the cubes and/or coroplast.

I was not aware that Home Depot carried coroplast large enough to cut for a C&C cage. They might have pre-designed coroplast signs like for garage sales, for sale signs for homes, etc. but not the 8' x 4' sheet you're going to need.

Try looking in your phone book (yellow pages) for sign makers, outdoor signs, banners, etc. & start calling them. Ask if they sell sheets of coroplast (corrugated plastic sign material), how large are they, and how much is the cost. In my area, an 8 foot by 4 foot sheet is $20.

Sometimes I can find the cubes on sale at Target for $16 per box. This is enough to make a 4 grid by 3 grid cage with grids left over for making a playpen. A 4x3 is plenty of room for two sows.

If you can't find any coroplast, you can buy linoleum flooring at Home Depot and this can be used in place of the coroplast. It is relatively inexpensive. While you're there, get a package of about 20 nylon zip ties (they're about $3) & use these to secure the grids. They work better than the connectors that come with the box of cubes and provide a more stable cage, especially if you are planning a second level.

Good luck--I hope your cage turns out great!
