C.C. Sabathia helps New York Yankees rout Toronto Blue Jays 6-1 – MLB Update
C.C. Sabathia made a superb comeback as New York Yankees routed the Toronto Blue Jays 6-1 at Yankee Stadium in New York on Tuesday, July 17 in second game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Sabathia, who was making his return from the 15-day Disabled List, showed just why he is an asset for the Yankees as he silenced the Blue Jays injury plagued hitting lineup. In a display of complete dominance, the starting pitcher struck-out six to grab
his tenth win of the season.
"It was tough sitting here and watching your teammates go out and battle every day," Sabathia said. "It feels good to come back and be a part of it."
"I love it," Sabathia said about the sweltering temperature. "My arm feels good when it's warm."
In his six effective innings, Sabathia gave up just four hits to lead the Yankees to their fourth win in five games after the All Star Break.
"I wasn't expecting as much velocity as he had tonight," catcher Stewart said in a post game interview. "I'm glad we have him back."
Andruw Jones also played a key role in deciding the outcome of the game as he hit an early three run home-run to put the Yankees on the board. Yankees’ left fielder used the conditions extremely effectively to improve his average to .239.
Chris Stewart doubled to left in the seventh and Derek Jeter doubled to right for a 5-0 lead in the seventh. Alex Rodriguez also made his presence felt as he grounded into fielder’s choice to second to extend Yankees’ lead to 6-0.
"I think I have a really good bench that can be extremely productive for us," New York manager Joe Girardi said. "It's been really helpful."
Colby Rasmus helped the Blue Jays avoid a humiliating shut-out with a sacrifice fly hit to left in the eighth. However, apart from him none of Toronto’s hitter could play a meaningful role.
Manager Joe Girardi will be an extremely happy man these days as Yankees seem destined to win this year’s World Series title.
