C. C. Sabathia’s 16 games winning streak ends as Baltimore Orioles bash the New York Yankees
The Baltimore Orioles were up to another task to fall the New York Yankees again. The ball club was successful last time around and the series was up for grabs in this game as the Yanks were looking for a save in the fixture. The World Series champions were going into the match with a two games losing streak and manager Joe Girardi was hoping for change when Carsten Charles Sabathia walked onto the mound for the encounter. Much to the disappointment of the 46,432 fans in the Yankee stadium, the champs were not going to win again.
The Yankees brought in Sabathia who was looking for his 20th win of the season and was unbeaten at home since last year. However, the Yankees wouldn’t get the big man to perform as he conceded 9 hits, 6 runs and 1 walk in his 6.1 innings of play. He struck out 5 hitters in his 109 pitches. The Orioles, on the other hand, did well and much was owed to Jake Arrieta who registered his 5th win of the campaign, allowing just 2 runs off 8 hits and 1 walk. He gave the new manager, Buck Showalter much to be happy about. The new coach has led the underdogs to 21 wins and 13 losses in the season. His record is second to none since his arrival, making him an impressive figure in the critics’ assessments.
The Orioles began the innings on the batting plate and it was going to be a difficult night for Sabathia. The 1st innings brought on the lead for the underdogs and it was yesterday’s shining star, Brian Roberts who got the show on the road. He singled to the first base through a shot to the centre field. He later advanced to second base with a passed ball by Jorge Posada. Felix Pie came on, in the meanwhile and was walked to the first plate. The pressure now began to mount and Nick Markakis got Brian to the third position, while Pie to the second with a single to the left. Ty Wigginton came on and provided the first run of the game as he singled to the right centre and got Roberts clear the last base for a run to Baltimore’s name. Pie and Markakis then made it 3 for the ball club when Adam Jones singled to the left. An early blow was dealt and Sabathia was going to regain his focus once again.
The Yanks came in to bat for the first time in the match and the bottom 1st inning provided the side for a much needed run. Much was to be owed to Brett Gardner who rallied the team to a necessary scoring initiative. He started off his campaign for the run with a bunt to the third fieldsman for a single. Derek Jeter then got himself grounded out to first, but got the first baseman ahead to the second bag. Mark Teixeira introduced himself next and singled to the left for a single. Gardner was on third and the batsman got through for New York’s first when Robinson Cano struck a single to the left.
Scores favoured the Orioles as they piled up the pressure on the Yankees in the top 3rd once again. Ty Wigginton was the first to move to the base as he doubled to deep centre. Adam Jones flied out and the team was 2 men down. That’s when Nolan Reimold walked in and smashed a 395 feet homer to the left to bring up 2 more runs for the team. The Yankees replied in the bottom 5th and much was owed to former Astros’ star, Lance Berkman, who created a single to the right. He later ran home, following Posada’s double to the deep centre. That brought up two runs for New York and fans were hoping to see more, as the game progressed.
Unfortunately for the Yankees, the team were not going to score any more runs as Baltimore launched their last offensive in the top 7th. J Bell was the man to score and he did so with a string of luck. He got to the second off an error by centre fielder, Curtis Granderson. Brian Roberts then got him to the third with a single to the right centre. Markakis then finally gave the opportunist the right push with a single to the left.
New York lost the series and the match ended with the Yankees 2 – 6 Orioles.
