C.J. Watson takes part in Basketball without Borders and talks about other changes in his life
C.J. Watson joined the ‘Basketball without Borders’ over a year ago and the newest Brooklyn Nets player is currently working in Africa. The main purpose of the program is to make the African youth aware about HIV/AIDS and the importance of education in the
long run.
Watson’s role so far has been to hold basketball clinics, in which he has been working on mainly the fundamental principles of shooting and working on follow through.
"It's fun," said Watson. "They already know a lot of stuff about basketball. It's just fun learning from an NBA player. Like someone told me, 'There might never be a time when I meet an NBA player ever again in my life.' So to get to actually come here and
make these kids' dreams come true, it's just fun to meet with them."
Ever since being let go by the Bulls, Watson has seen much change in his life. He has had to shift to a new city, and also completed his degree in psychology from the University of Tennessee.
Watson also took part Tim Grgurich’s camp this summer – an event he has been a part of since college. This time though, he entered the camp with a different mindset.
“I tried to go out there and go harder in the scrimmages and drills and learn a lot more from the coaches," Watson said. "I tried to get my one-on-one moves better."
Watson was one of the top Bulls reserve last season and he actually took the starting point guard position when Derrick Rose sat out due to injuries in the regular season and when the star point guard suffered an ACL injury in
the first round of playoffs against the Philadelphia 76ers. The Bulls decided not to pursue the reserve guard this off season though, and Watson eventually found his way into the newly formed Brooklyn Nets. Here, he will play as a backup to yet another leading
point guard in Deron Williams and Watson needs to be at his best to maintain the standards.
