C. J. Wilson pitches shutout as Texas Rangers defeat Cleveland Indians 2-0 – MLB Update
C.J. Wilson threw another shut-out game as Texas Rangers beat Cleveland Indians 2-0 at Progressive Field, Cleveland on Sunday, June 5.
Mitch Moreland and Elvis Andrus contributed in the team’s 2-0 victory with their respective homers as the Rangers won eight of the nine games they have played. Importantly, Sunday’s victory was the first four-game sweep by the Rangers against the Indians
in over three decades.
"We sit around and talk pitching every day," Wilson said. "We bounce ideas off each other. Today, I used all my weapons -- a back-door cutter, fastballs up and in, changed speed on breaking stuff."
However, it is the sixth shut-out in the last 20 games the Rangers have played that added to the glorious success of the team.
Winning the last three games, the Rangers were not complacent, as they were remarkably poised to sweep the four-game series and they managed to attain that. After Wilson threw a strong first inning, Moreland homered to centre to give an early 1-0 lead to
the Rangers.
Wilson unleashed his effective fastballs and limited the Indians’ offence. Mitch Talbot was pounced upon by the Rangers’ offence, as Elvis Andrus homered to left in the third inning to double the lead.
C.J. was then supposed to play his role, as he kept throwing pitches that were masterfully executed as the Indians’ batters were unable to play him.
Although Talbot, after giving two runs in three innings, pitched well, Wilson ensured nothing went wrong up until the eighth inning he pitched. When Neftali Feliz came, he was equally instrumental in limiting the Indians’ batters.
Feliz paved the way for a 2-0 win, as the joy was immense in the camp. "They have been terrific," Andrus said of the Rangers' pitching staff. "They throw strikes and make it easier. The offense doesn't have to do too much.
"These guys came in and outplayed us," manager Manny Acta said. "They have a very good team and showed us why they're the American League champs. They're talented up and down. They're very deep, too. The title is probably going to have to run through Texas
again."
The Rangers are to face Detroit Tigers in a two-game series, as the team is in a strong position to pose a serious challenge to any team they face. Tuesday’s game will be a practical demonstration of it.
