Question:

C-sections with general anesthesia...what is the typical protocol???

I've had 2 of these and because of a vascular condition I don't get a choice in the matter. My husband has never been allowed in during the c-section & I was wondering if that was just my particular hospitals preference or if that is pretty much typical no matter where you go.

I am currently going to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore MD. I plan to ask during my next appointment if my husband can be in the room or if at the least, they will let a nurse record our babies first cry. If they say there is no way then I might consider switching hospitals. There is another hospital 40 minutes from me that is currently taping for the show Birth Day. I know that if I were to go there they would at least let the birth be recorded since I've seen Birth Day show c-sections with general anesthesia before. But maybe, just maybe they'd be liberal enough to let my husband in the room also.

Does anyone know why a husband wouldn't be allowed in anyway? My husband has been to war, nothing is going to scare him.

  1. Being that you are actually under general anesthesia in your case, your spouse would not be allowed to be in the OR in any hospital.

If you were awake and had an epidural/spinal, then the spouse is allowed.

I'm sorry that this isn't what you wanted to hear.  I think that having the baby's first cry recorded is a very sweet idea.

I wish you all the best.
