  1. Yup as the other fellows have said, you have to be an officer. I just wanted to share, that I can see why you would have a desire to fly C-17`s. I am under their flight pattern and see C-5`s, C-17`s as well as various fuel tankers fly over head at various times during the day. My former neighbor was a C-5 captain and took me through an awsome tour of his plane.

  2. Yes All aviators in the AF are officers,,,,enlisted are the flight crew. In the Army you can be a pilot as a Warrant Officer but it will be in a Helicopter such as a Blackhawk or appache.

  3. To become a pilot in the USAF, you'll need to become a commissioned officer. To do that, you either go to the Air Force Academy, go to a college or university that offers Air Force ROTC, or get your degree, then enlist to go through the Air Force Officer Candidate School.

While in your commissioning source, you'll take a DODMERB physical that will medically qualify or disqualify you for aviation. (If you are unsure about how good your eyesight is, get a FAA civilian medical examination.)

If you made it this far, you just have to kick butt in school, get high grades, score really high on the AFOQT (ask an AFROTC recruiter, find one at www.afrotc.com), graduate from college (or USAFA) and get commisioned with a pilot slot.

    Now....

All USAF pilot candidates will go through a roughly 12 month course called UPT (undergraduate pilot training). There, you will learn to fly your basic trainer, like a Cessna or the new DA-20s. Then you transition in to the T-6 Texan II training aircraft. If you pass, you will be assigned to either a heavy track or a fighter track. You want the Heavy track.

In the heavy track, you are trained in the T-1 Jayhawk. When you finish heavy school, you go to another school to learn how to fly the particular aircraft you get assigned to.

so there you go. Its a lot of training. But you get to be an Air Force pilot when youre done

All military pilots are officers.  So all pilots have to go through officer school (college).  They are very competitive.

Speak to your school guidance counselor.  They know about these things (as it is like applying to college).

    Good Luck...
