Well where do i start, i geuss it would be just before I left school and I was called into the carrers advisor and she asked what would I like to do when I leave school. And just looked at her with a blank face and said don't no. See thats the thing ever since I left school I don't have a clue what I want to do with my life. A new a could not be a bum so i got an apprentiship as a plumber which is good but still don't know what I would like to do. so 2 years down the line am still in the same pickle. Sometimes a just feel like packing my bags telling my boss to shove his just where the sun don't shine and traveling round the world to find myself and find out what I want to do is that wrong? I have talked to a lot of friends and they say I should follow my dream but getting an apprentiship in the uk is so hard and now that ave got1it would be stupid to let it go but should I just do it and to h**l with the consequences? and I am 19. Yeaes old.

  1. Dont stress over it.  Stress will only cloud your thinking on making a rash decision. As long as your doing somthing now, and you can take care of yourself you have plenty of time to contiplate what you want to do, educate yourself, and try different carrers to see what you like.  I want through many jobs when I was younger trying to discover what I wanted to do for a living and where I could make the most money.  I never stayed at a job longer than a year because it either wasnt what I wanted, not exciting, or not somethng I wanted to do the rest of my life.  I then found a job, liked the challenage, people, and pay, and have been there 10 years.  Albeit, I am now ready to move on, but I am not in a position that I have to leave in a hurry, so I can take my time looking for the perfect job, if there truly is one.   Try different fields or trades.  You are young and can afford to do it at this stage in your life.  It gets harder to do when your older.  The worst thing there is in life is to have a job that you dont want to goto everyday.  Taking a job and not being sure if you will like it or not is not that bad, but an educational experience.  Remember the saying - "You came looking, You can Leave looking".  Just dont cut yourself short at a young age, nor think you have to decide what you want to do for the rest of your life today.

  2. How far are you from finishing your apprenticeship? Another couple years is nothing. You'd be 22 and could save some cash for a little while before setting off on your sojourn. I wouldn't throw away what you've invested into this so far. Having skills and experience that you can point to is better than having none. I'm not saying you shouldn't figure out what you want to do, but maybe finish up what you've started before moving onto something else. If you finish your apprenticeship you can at least, if in the future have a need, find employment using the skills you are learning. good luck.

  3. Don't give up your job.  You are perfectly normal.  Most people your age and people even much older haven't quite figured out what they want to do.  You need to ask yourself what your passion is.  What are you passionate about?  I'd also suggest taking some personality tests to determine strengths and weaknesses.  Then find a career counselor or someone else to speak with regarding things.  Many people don't find fulfillment with their day jobs.  They find fulfillment by doing things they love when not at work.  Volunteer work, family, etc.  I wish the best for you.

  4. hi paul,

i understand your dilema..it was and still is the same for me now(im 33).

when i left school i trained as a chef for 7 years, which done my head in so i quit and tried to join the french foreign legion but luckily or unluckily i wasnt succesful,so i worked on the buildings as a shuttering carpenter for funny enough another 7 years which im sick of and now im waiting to sit my truck test so i can quit and try driving for a while.

like you i wanted to travel, and did..

at 29 i quit my job after saving money and went to australia for a year which turned out to be the greatest year of my life.it answered quistions inside me i never knew i would ask and it gave me a realisation that life is prescious.since then ive worked as a teacher in uganda, rwanda and kenya for a few months which was to say the least,f!*&ing incredible.at the moment im shuttering in norway (im from ireland by the way) which is only "ok" but its still traveling.the point im getting to is that i can quit and restart my job(that i dont like) each time ive enough money saved to travel again because i finishd my training first.i know it sucks being u at the moment but get your skills first, its much easier working a job you dont like while planning your next move than doing it on the dole.chase your dreams and dont give up but dont move to fast time is on your side....

    hope this helps.

p.s ALWAYS wear a condom..its hard to travel with a kid/infection in tow.

  5. you should do what you think you should like you friends said you should chase that dream you would like to live.

  6. The good news is that you're still young, so it should be easy for you to change careers. The bad news ... well, none.

It's fine to follow your dream, but take caution. Don't follow a dream at the expense of income or growth potential. If you're not sure what sort of career you want to pursue, read the book "What Color is Your Parachute," by Nelson Bolles (links below). It will help you figure out a line of work suitable for you.

  7. 19 ? take a good advise, keep on working and try to learn more, it will pay off, believe me, and stop asking yourself because some people have 3x your age and still don't know,

    so.......

  8. Try to be content with your lot because the grass is not greener on the next field, self improvement is the way forward, try using the spell checker for a start.
