  1. seriously just dont bother your fish will need it especially at night because it needs oxgen to rest its what the fish takes in

if you are trying to save power there is also no point because the airpump is powered but a small motor that is powered by an electro-magnet witch uses rarely any power at all

just leave it on its designed to always be kept on at all times

  2. How big is the tank?  If you have just a couple of fish in a large rectangular tank that might be possible...  Though I wouldn't recommend it.  I had my air pump give out one day and within a couple of hours half my fish had died and the labyrinth fish(ones that can breathe air) were gasping for oxygen at the top of the tank.  I don't think cichlids have that ability.  So I don't think you could.  Unless you want the fish to run out of oxygen in the middle of the night and die.  But I doubt you want that.

  3. u can turn it off during the night but turn it back on as soon as u wake up nothing bad happens i turn mine off when i go to sleep another reason is because my fish will not sleep untill i turn it off

u gotta give the air pump a break so yeah turn it off during the night when u go to sleep n when u wake up turn it back on!

  4. Ok here's the deal.  If you are using a HOB (Hang On Back) type of a filter, and depending on what your population is, you might not even need the air pump to begin with.  If you are using an internal filter like a Cannister or UGF (Under Gravel Filter) then I would NOT turn off the air pump.

Much of this is going to depend on the two things though.  What kind of filter are you using, and what is the total population.  It might even help further if you listed your tank size too.

Great point Jack, but unless you run your return line of that cannister along the surface, which I don't though, you aren't going to get enough surface agitation.  That's why I say if they are using cannister or UGF I wouldn't turn this off.  On top of that, I mean why would you?  It's not like a filter or air pump is going to damage you on an electric bill, say compared to typical air conditioning, or a microwave will.

  5. Its best to have it on 24/7, but if it is bothering you, yea you can turn it off at night.

  6. you can, although preferably keep it on.

  7. I wouldn't turn off the air pump - it helps oxygenate the water so that your fish can breathe. If the pump is too noisy, perhaps you should consider buying a new pump. I have my fish tank in my bedroom, and I sleep all night with the air filter running and it doesn't bother me.

So therefore my advice to you is - no, don't turn off the air pump at night.

  8. If you have a decent power filter of some sort and the tank isn't overstocked then you dont need really need an airpump, so yes you could turn it off at night. The power filter(s) will circulate enough water to provide oxygen exchange for a sensibly stocked tank.

  9. Agree with the previous post, it really depends on the type of filter that you have.

Air pump doesn't inject oxygen into your water. It creates turbulence at your water surface, and that is where the oxygen gets in.

If you have a filter that already creates enough surface water flow, your air pump is unnecessary.

Both my 30g and 75g tank use canister filter. My air bubbles are just for show. I only turn the air pump on 2% of the time for show, or to mix the water a bit. All my cichlids (11), clown/yoyo loaches, molly, guppies, shrimp, red tail shark, etc,  etc... never died.
