  3. Biological hazards that would come from that are pretty easy to kill, and usually are killed as long as you live in a developed country and aren't drinking right from the creek.

    At the very least, all the particles are allowed to settle and a disinfecting agent such as chlorine is added to kill any remaining microbes.

    The chlorine presents a very small health risk, compared to that posed by the microbes. Some people are concerned by that risk and chose bottled water or a home filter. There is some evidence that plastic bottles may increase your risk of cancer if they are left in the sun before you drink them, however.

    If you have a problem with an unusual amount of rotten trees in a creek near you for some reason, you may have other public health problems, like bugs.
