Does one need a passport or will a Perm. Res. Card (2 yr. / conditional Greencard) and a US, Drivers License be enough?

For the US Citizen, I imagine a DL and valid Passport will do?

THANKS!

  1. Those who said you can use your birth certificate are not GETTING IT!  You cannot use your birth certificate because you were not born in the  country you will be trying to re-enter.  That is what your green card is for.  So...you may use your green card and a photo I.D.  Starting July 1, 2009, all people will need a passport for all manner of travel to and from Cnada and the   U.S.  A  U.S. citizen or a Canadian citizen may use a birth certificte and photo I.D. at this time.

  2. If you are crossing via air, you need a passport along with your permanent resident card (to prove you can legally work).  End of discussion.

It's my understanding that Americans can still get away with a birth certificate and a government-issued photo ID (i.e. driver's licence) on land-crossings (but this will change by early 2009).

    In short...get a passport.

  3. It will depend on how you are entering the US from Canada.

If you are going by AIR then you need a passport and if a Perm Resident that card as well as your home country's passport.

If you are going by LAND or SEA then a Government Issued Photo ID and birth certificate or a passport. For a Perm Resident that card as well as the passport from your home country.

  4. DL and birth certificate is enough to get into the states from Canada. I know because I just went from my hometown to Florida.

Passports are better so use that.

Your Res. card is great as well. you can show all the cards if they ask for them.
